How To Fix Dell 1720
Dell 1720 is the name of the error that contains information about the error, including the reason why it occurred, which system component or application was malfunctioning that caused the error, and other information. The numerical code in the name of the error contains data that can be decoded by the manufacturer of the faulty component or application. An error using this code can occur in many different places in the system. Although the name contains some details, it is still difficult for the user to find and eliminate the cause of the error without specialized technical knowledge or the appropriate software.
From the Forums
A user in the forum details it further:
I have installed latest drivers (8400M GS) and updated Windows. Happens at random moments but lasts no longer than a couple of seconds. Current issue: For a brief second or two, the screen blinks i guess (best way to describe it). Could this possible be a hardware issue or software? Help still needed.
What can I do now? Turned off a couple of features such as screen saver and such. First time I experienced this issue with a laptop before and I am not to familiar with the inside of a laptop.

Dell 1720 and 64 bit Vista
So I have a Dell 1720 and a newly installed 64 bit vista..(Business) My laptop came with 32bit Premium, But since it crashed i figured I would put 64 bit on to get the most out of my 4 gigs of RAM, But I have managed to get all of the drivers working BUT 1 It is the Wireless card It doesn't work.. Does anyone know of a 64 bit Driver for the dell 1720?
Dell In spiron 1720 wi-fi failure
I have checked that wi-fi is switched on. No matter how I search for the wireless network the computer fails to find it, or any other network (it usually sees their neighbour's). I have tried installing the drivers for the Intel Pro/Wireless device (the system found two - one marked Intel and one marked Microsoft - I tried both) but I got the report: Windows cannot install the drivers. On restarting it started up normally but wi-fi failed to work. (I wasn't present but that's how she explained it to me).
Do you think the computer's wi-fi card is dead? I know the router is operating normally because I'm now using her husband's laptop via wi-fi via their router (BT Home Hub). In Device Manager, under the "Network adapters" heading, almost everything has a yellow exclamation mark against it. Maybe a long-shot, but have you tried a System Restore back to before the glitch?
Here's how it looks - everything has the yellow exclamation except the item I have marked:
Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)
Bluetooth Device (RFComm Protocol TDI) (No yellow exclamation)
Broadcom 440x10/100 Integrated Controller
Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connestion
Teredo Tunneling Pseudo Interface
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IPv6)
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)
All the error reports read the same: "The device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this devic...

Dell Inspiron 1720 woes
when I pulled the the hard drive out and installed a gently used hard drive into it, it would not start windows. Is there a setting in CMOS I need to address?
What I want to do at this point is reformat the drive and install a clean copy of Windows XP.
Not a big deal, but when I tried to go back to step one and install windows XP, the installation software acted like if did not have a hard drive in it. Any help would be appreciated. It would look like it was going to start but before I could get to a desktop, it would restart.
A friend gave this Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop that the hard drive had crashed.
dell 1720 hard drive
I have a Dell 1720 laptop. Tried lots of things, just got a new laptop hard drive. Installed it and installed the disk.
F1 F2 F5 stuff. What am I missing? The laptop says "No boot sector or internal hard drive" Then "no boot device. Few months ago it just stopped working.
Dell 1720 charger question
If the adapter says None or Unknown then it's an issue with the adapter. Suggest you replace AC adapter. Under the Advanced screen, look for Battery Health, it should say "This Battery Is Performing Normally". Under the main screen, look for the AC adapter type. Power on computer, quickly start tapping the F2 key continuously, you should be in the BIOS screen.
Power off computer, and then make sure AC adapter is connected to computer well
2. Your best bet is to buy a genuine Dell AC adapter, however you can check the status of the AC adapter and battery in the BIOS.
1. Any thoughts?
I have recently acquired an old Dell 1720 laptop that didn't come with a charger.
If there's any other message, it could mean that the battery is faulty and needs replacement.
It runs the laptop fine and it shows "charging" but the battery shows only 2 lights (partial charge) and is stuck there. I did have one for an HP that has the same specs as the Dell (19v @ 20watts) and plugs into the Dell ok.
Dell Inspiron 1720 BSOD's
We have completed a fresh install of Win Vista recently which has eliminated many of the issues, but the machine is still occasionally BSODing.
Here's the Speccy URL
And there's a Viewer output attached as HTML file.
Please let me know your thoughts?!
Looking at the BSODs...I would start with a check of the hard drive itself.
You want to run the long/extended test...you do not want to do anything other than that so do not elect any other options which the diagnostic utility may offer.

BSOD Dell Inspiron 1720 please help
Please do a Windows Update to install Service Pack 2.
Laptop has been randomly blue screening since I bought it around 3 years ago, it doesn?t matter what applications/programmes are running if any, there is no pattern sometimes it will be 2 or 3 weeks between crashes other times it can be days or hours. I replaced the hard drive in January with a brand new one and the problem was still occurring so this week I replaced it again and it crashed less than an hour after clean install of genuine windows OS.
There has been no damage to the laptop, I?m the only person who uses it and can confirm it has not been dropped, banged etc. You are only using Vista without any SP.
Dell inspiron 1720 help needed
It just loads this Dell media direct thing when I hit the bottom with the house. Please help, my kids have to do their homework!!!!

new dell inspiron 1720 won't start up
worked fine(although i do not care for vista)until sunday morning. and if so, any solution idea's other than a factory restore? none of those worked. tried to fix by going in through the advanced boot options, repairs computer selection.
or to start it up normally. once past that screen, the screen just stayed dark with the white cursor showing in the middle.
have had a new dell computer since late dec. '07.
in safe mode, safe mode with networking and with command prompt. so, before i do a factory restore, has anyone heard of this problem happening? tried to do a start up repair from there and that did not work. when i powered up the computer it went to a screen that said "windows recovory system" and gave me 4 options to start up.
Dell Inspiron 1720 + Vista 32-bit
Never updated any drivers in this 4 year old laptop before. So, I don't recommend anyone out there to use Dell Tech Support for out of warranty machines.
-I don't have the knowledge to go into the Registry and removing whatever in there is related to the sound card and maybe let Vista treat is as new hardware and reinstall the original "old" drivers.....if that is even possible.
-Any help will be appreciated before I throw the machine in the garbage. Now I have a red cross over the speaker icon and when I click on Open Volume Mixer it says "no audio device is installed". Regards,
Steps I tried in order....
-rollback the drivers....couldn't do it....it was greyed out.
-uninstall and delete the driver software in Device Manager and let Vista install whatever drivers it had in store for it....didn't help
-did a restart holding the Fn key to check if the sound card had been damaged and was no longer working.....passed all the sound tests....sound card is OK.
-tried some free tools from the net regarding driver repsir, registry repair, PC repair, etc....didn't help
-tried some crazy solutions from the net (Microsoft Techie Forum) such as doing a "scan for hardware changes" under Device Manager and turn the machine on and off many times in sequence......didn't help.
-for some reason I had no restore points saved in order to restore the entire machine to a previous date......I think nCleaner...
Dell Inspiron 1720 x64 success!
I want to report that I successfully installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. Another thing I am investigating is why Windows Vista is still in the boot menu, and this while I deleted the vista partition and formated it before clean install. zx81
I was wondering if you've found a work around for the touch pad.
Have a nice day! I installed W7 home premium 64-bit. You have to enable Aero manualy, I forgot how I did it ;-)
A very minor driver isue is still not solved, but overall everything works great. The scroll bars on my touch pad don't work any more.
I looked for a driver for it and no help from dell. Only driver needed was latest Nvidea driver for Geforce 8600M GT. Questions are always welcome, I will try to answer them. Base System Device no driver
Experience Index 4.7, well I am satisfied with the way Windows 7 Feels and look.
Any input would be most appreciated.
Dell Inspiron 1720 LAGGGGG PLEASE HELP!
THIS IS GETTING ON MY NERVES! What process have you got running?
My Dell ls ALWAYS USING 1.08 GB OF RAM EVEN IF IM DOING NOTHING!
Everything in your taskbar and more will use a bit of memory to run.
SigmaTel dell inspiron 1720
I think it is an issue with SigmaTel. This also happens if I return from a break, and my display turns on when I move the mouse (while the music is still playing). If I just listen to music, and don't do other things, it does not occur as far as I tested.
I've tried about every driver I can think of and still can't get it to work.
When I am listening to music, sometimes the sound is distorted for a short period of time. Now that I've installed Win7 I don't have any sound at all. zx81
I have an XPS M1710 and the sound has always been messed up.
Hp dv9500t or Dell Inspirion 1720
HP has 512 mb 8600 GS, Dell has the 256 mb 8600 GT
I just realized that the dv9500t has the nvidia 8600M gs card, which is considerably slower than the 8600 GT. I customized a dv9500t and for almost exaclty $2,000 it has:
17 inch screen
Intel T7500 Processor
2 GB RAM
200 GB 7200 RPM Hard drive (100 x 2)
Nvidia 512 MB 8600M GS
The Dell has:
17 inch screen
2 GB RAM
250 GB 5400 RPM Hard drive
Nvidia 256 MB 8600 GT
The Dell was about 300 - 400 bucks more, but I can use the $350 off Dell coupon since it's an Inspirion which brings the price down to $2100 after taxes.
I want to get the most out of the notebook I chose, so do you guys think it'll be worth spending a little more for the 8600 GT?
I'm kind of looking to order tonight because I'll be on vacation the next two weeks. So, both compuers have the new Santa Rosa T7500 processors, 200+ Gb Hard Drives, but the Dell has the 8600 Gt, as opposed to the 8600 Gs in the HP.
Dell Inspiron 1720 (or 1721)
Oh and i have never used Vista so cannot comment on that part.
Is there anything that makes this a bad machine and what would you recommend instead? Color and design aren't crucial but it makes for a good tie-breaker.
I would like a webcam and to be able to watch dvd's and listen to music and other such media activities. Out of the two i'd go for the 1721, purely because of the specifications...just be very cautious about DELL's customer service which seems a lot to be desired. I need to get a new laptop.
something happened to the first post.
I can't spend a whole heck of a lot and am interested in the Dell Inspiron 1720. anyways, here it is again... I don't do any gaming to speak of. Is there any reason NOT to get this laptop?
I have heard that Vista is a problem for many people. Is it serious? I've heard that it might be possible to install Windows XP on there instead of Vista (I will read the other thread about that in this forum in a minute). Other than that it would be used primarily for internet and college coursework.
