Inspiron 1720 reinstall disk?

He passed away in March.
I now own my brother's Inspiron 1720 laptop. Thank you so much!
I wish to reinstall the OS but I do not have the disk.

It currently has Windows 7 Home Premium on it, so I would like to reinstall that, even though the label says Windows Vista Home Premium, so I would also like to find out how to upgrade it to that again. How can I get the reinstall disk? I've tried several downloads of Vista and Win 7 with the product keys listed on the label to no avail.

BIOS Update Inspiron 1720

Please download the below BIOS file for your system. Inspiron 1720 BIOS ZIP
Do let me know if you have any issues, the battery must be charged and connected to the AC adpt during the update. Any interruptions during the installation could render the motherboard useless.

I have an Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium and I wish to upgrade to Windows 7.   The Microsoft Compatibility Test indicated there would be no problem.   However when I tried to install Windows 7 Home Premium it stalled saying I needed to update the BIOS version (A03).   Having checked Dell Support the latest version is A09.   When I try to download it all I get is a Download Manager which tells me there are no files to download.   I believe the file I need is 1702_A09.EXE.   How do I install this BIOS update? All open applications have to be closed.

Need XP Sound Drivers For Inspiron 1720...

Try Belarc...or System Info for Windows...Both FREE. Well, I successfully backdated my Inspiron 1720 notebook to XP from vista home premium, however, I cannot find any drivers or even the chipset model for my Inspiron's  integrated audio, all that the documentation that comes with my computer tells me is that its "Sound Blaster Audigy Advanced MB", yet I cannot find any XP drivers for it anywhere, I know it is some sort of sigmatel chipset, however i do not know which one, Everest and Unknown Device Identifier cannot identify it.The specs, briefly, are this:The northbridge is the intel Crestline GM956/PM965, southbridge is the Intel 82801HBM ICH9-DOEverest tells me the audio adapter is "SigmaTel Unknown @ Intel 82801HB ICH8 - High Definition Audio Controller"Even with this info and several hours of googling I am unable to find any drivers that work, i have tried four driver sets, they are listed below:the dell R108276 driver package, the dell R155105 package, the dell R111393 driver package, and the gateway driver package for the "Sound blaster audigy advanced MB". None work, it just tells me "Device Object not present, Restart the system and try again."And, yes, the audio is enabled in the BIOS, there is no option to disable it actually.

Dell Inspiron 1720 x64 success!

I want to report that I successfully installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop. Another thing I am investigating is why Windows Vista is still in the boot menu, and this while I deleted the vista partition and formated it before clean install. zx81

I was wondering if you've found a work around for the touch pad.

Have a nice day! I installed W7 home premium 64-bit. You have to enable Aero manualy, I forgot how I did it ;-)

A very minor driver isue is still not solved, but overall everything works great. The scroll bars on my touch pad don't work any more.

I looked for a driver for it and no help from dell. Only driver needed was latest Nvidea driver for Geforce 8600M GT. Questions are always welcome, I will try to answer them. Base System Device no driver

Experience Index 4.7, well I am satisfied with the way Windows 7 Feels and look.

Any input would be most appreciated.

Dell Inspiron 1720 (or 1721)

Oh and i have never used Vista so cannot comment on that part.
Is there anything that makes this a bad machine and what would you recommend instead? Color and design aren't crucial but it makes for a good tie-breaker.

I would like a webcam and to be able to watch dvd's and listen to music and other such media activities. Out of the two i'd go for the 1721, purely because of the specifications...just be very cautious about DELL's customer service which seems a lot to be desired. I need to get a new laptop.

something happened to the first post.

I can't spend a whole heck of a lot and am interested in the Dell Inspiron 1720. anyways, here it is again... I don't do any gaming to speak of. Is there any reason NOT to get this laptop?

I have heard that Vista is a problem for many people. Is it serious? I've heard that it might be possible to install Windows XP on there instead of Vista (I will read the other thread about that in this forum in a minute). Other than that it would be used primarily for internet and college coursework.

Dell Inspiron 1720 won't start

I just started learning more about computers so PLEASE help me out!
When I first turn on my laptop it's did nothing but go to a black screen? In F 12 boot mode I got a few options to choose from  but I have no idea which one I should choose.

how to get wireless connection Inspiron on 1720?

I looked on the net for help and found this:
"First check if the Wireless Switch is turned on. They're pretty cheap.

Wired connection is working, in the DM, the "Network Controller" has the Yellow question mark,  I tried all 5 drivers here:
but cannot get the wireless working, I moved the wireless switch to the right, does not light up.

The switch is on left side of the system. If that does not work, then I suggest you uninstall and reinstall the Wireless Card driver. To uninstall, click on start, right click on My Computer, click on properties, click on device manager, click on the + symbol next to Network, right click on Dell 1502 card and click on uninstall, click ok to confirm. Have you tried a little USB WiFi adapter?

Once its removed, do no restart your computer, click on the below link to download and install the updated driver, and then restart your computer."
When I click on the + sign next to "Network Adapters", I am only seeing "Broadcom 440x10/100 Integrated Controller", help please? Sounds like the switch may be bad. Then check if you are able to detect wireless networks.

Dell Inspiron 1720 BSOD's

We have completed a fresh install of Win Vista recently which has eliminated many of the issues, but the machine is still occasionally BSODing.
Here's the Speccy URL
And there's a Viewer output attached as HTML file.
Please let me know your thoughts?!

Looking at the BSODs...I would start with a check of the hard drive itself.
You want to run the long/extended do not want to do anything other than that so do not elect any other options which the diagnostic utility may offer.

Inspiron 1720 Graphics problem

If the Vista drivers won't install, things get more complex. It's common for laptop makers to use custom device IDs for their graphics controllers, so standard installers may not recognize the controller.

Dell does not list any Windows 7 drivers, but you could try the Vista ones:

Drivers & Downloads

If they install, you may be able to update then via WIndows Update or with the latest drivers from

System config
Inspiron 1720
Processor: Intel core 2 2.4 gh
display: Nvdia 8400gs

I take it that the laptop is using the generic VGA drivers for your graphics controller.

I have installed windows 7 two day ago from th start i am facing graphics issues when playing video and also when browsing it is smooth experience please suggest any solution for this problem.

Dell Inspiron 1720 + Vista 32-bit

Never updated any drivers in this 4 year old laptop before. So, I don't recommend anyone out there to use Dell Tech Support for out of warranty machines.
-I don't have the knowledge to go into the Registry and removing whatever in there is related to the sound card and maybe let Vista treat is as new hardware and reinstall the original "old" drivers.....if that is even possible.
-Any help will be appreciated before I throw the machine in the garbage. Now I have a red cross over the speaker icon and when I click on Open Volume Mixer it says "no audio device is installed". Regards,

Steps I tried in order....
-rollback the drivers....couldn't do was greyed out.
-uninstall and delete the driver software in Device Manager and let Vista install whatever drivers it had in store for it....didn't help
-did a restart holding the Fn key to check if the sound card had been damaged and was no longer working.....passed all the sound tests....sound card is OK.
-tried some free tools from the net regarding driver repsir, registry repair, PC repair, etc....didn't help
-tried some crazy solutions from the net (Microsoft Techie Forum) such as doing a "scan for hardware changes" under Device Manager and turn the machine on and off many times in sequence......didn't help.
-for some reason I had no restore points saved in order to restore the entire machine to a previous date......I think nCleaner...

SigmaTel dell inspiron 1720

I think it is an issue with SigmaTel. This also happens if I return from a break, and my display turns on when I move the mouse (while the music is still playing). If I just listen to music, and don't do other things, it does not occur as far as I tested.

I've tried about every driver I can think of and still can't get it to work.

When I am listening to music, sometimes the sound is distorted for a short period of time. Now that I've installed Win7 I don't have any sound at all. zx81

I have an XPS M1710 and the sound has always been messed up.

No power on Dell Inspiron 1720

Plug in the power supply.

I bought this 17" Dell Inspiron 1720 just over a year ago. It did the same with theirs. Ensure the system is powered off.

The next thing I checked was to see whether or not the battery had any power left. Press and hold the <Fn> key on the keyboard. If not, go here and run this diagnostic.

When I would plug the power supply in the green light would come on indicating the unit was working, but as soon as I plugged it into the back of the laptop, (when I put my ear to the power supply) there would be a little zap and the green light would go out.

Release both buttons. When I pressed the button on the back it had 5 lights indicating it was full. Continue to hold the <Fn> key while pressing the power button. I turned around to do something, for less than five minutes and when I returned the computer was turned off.

It did. Thinking it was the power supply, I had some friends bring over their Dell power supplies. A week ago I was using it and everything was running just fine.

I pressed the power button, no power, no lights to indicate any power is going to the unit. Remove all external peripherals. I checked my power supply, tried different power outlets to no avail. So, before I go and have to more than likely shell out lots of money to someone to fix it, I would like to know if any one else has come across this same thing and what it may be.

See if that works....

BSOD Dell Inspiron 1720 please help

Please do a Windows Update to install Service Pack 2.

Laptop has been randomly blue screening since I bought it around 3 years ago, it doesn?t matter what applications/programmes are running if any, there is no pattern sometimes it will be 2 or 3 weeks between crashes other times it can be days or hours. I replaced the hard drive in January with a brand new one and the problem was still occurring so this week I replaced it again and it crashed less than an hour after clean install of genuine windows OS.

There has been no damage to the laptop, I?m the only person who uses it and can confirm it has not been dropped, banged etc. You are only using Vista without any SP.

Problems with BIOS A09 in Inspiron 1720

the kind you double click and then it extracts the files and installs them? first did the bios you have recognise the new ram? Let us know if you need help

I've run into a series of problems.

-- I downloaded microsoft 7 from the microsoft online store
-- I can't complete the setup process until I update the BIOS -- error message is:

did you get one of the dell ""exe" updates? Contact your computer manufacturer for a BIOS update, install the update, and then start windows instalation again. Contact your computer manufacturer for a BIOS update, install the update, and then start windows instalation again. I think there might even be an A10 bios, because I have that on mine.

Just to be on the safe side DL again, and try to re-install. Second it seems to be better to have less ram when installing or flashing. I've run into a series of problems.
