How To Fix Error Code: 800736B3 with 7 failed updates

A mistake or inaccuracy, an error is caused about by committing miscalculations on the things that you do. It is a state of having a wrong judgement or conception in your conduct that allows catastrophic things to happen. In machines, error is a way to measure the difference between the observed value or the computed value of an event against its real value.

It is a deviation from correctness and accuracy. When errors occur, machines crash, computers freeze and softwares stop working. Errors are mostly unintentional events to happen. Most of the time, errors are a result of poor management and preparation.

Having a sign that tells us of issues that we need to solve in life for us to move forward is a great idea. While it does not always work in life, it does in computers. Messages that indicate the issues your computer encounters are called error codes. They appear whenever there is a problem such as incorrect data input or faulty hardware. Computer programmers add predefined error codes and messages in their system codes so whenever there is an issue, it prompts the users. While error codes may be predefined, there are different sets of error codes with different meanings for other kinds of computer programs.

A lot of users experience difficulties in installing Windows software updates. Most of the time, the update error message doesn’t tell you anything helpful to fix the issue. One the most common update error is “Windows could not search for new updates” plus an error code “80240442”. Updates are important as they deliver hotfixes, security patches and other improvements. Therefore, it is vital to install them when they are available.

Microsoft has streamlined the update process in the recent versions of Windows. However, this does not mean that update errors are totally out of the picture especially with issues relating to compatibility.

From the Forums

A user in the forum details it further:

For months now I've had windows tell me that I have some updates to be installed. Every time I try it fails to update giving me the error code: 800736B3. also my cbs.log was too big to fit in that one post so i had to make another one.

What causes Error Code: 800736B3 with 7 failed updates

It is important to always run a system diagnostic scan when Windows Updates fail to download or install in order to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. Microsoft provides a troubleshooter for Windows Update related errors that will detect the problem and most likely can automatically fix it. However, there are always these type of errors that are hard to pin down.

Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot the problem and fix it.

  1. Clear up your Temporary Files and Internet Cache and reboot.
  2. Disable your Firewall and Anti-virus software.
  3. Use the Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter to reset Windows Updates settings to defaults.
  4. Flush the Software Distribution Folder.
  5. Reset the Catroot folder.
  6. Boot in Clean Boot State and run Windows Update again.

Update Error 800736B3, Updates Failed

Can anyone give me a light in the proper direction? Based on my checksur log, I have the following:

Checking Package Watchlist
(f) CBS Watchlist Package Missing 0x80070002 Microsoft-Windows-Embedded-SKU-Foundation-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~0.0.0.0 Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.2.9200.16521 Package registry presence failed, possibly an orphaned package on package watchlist

But I am unsure where to go or how to continue at this point. Windows 7 Home Premium, 64BIT OEM on HP Pavilion.

I believe I have a SIMILAR issue (not the same). Window Update failing error code 800736B3

I have followed the SFC, update readiness, and clean boot procedures listed in the thread I linked above. SFC found nothing, readiness tool ran and installed hotfix but did not fix issue. Any sugegstions?

I also tried to install updates 1 at a time, to not avail, as well as the clean boot.

Windows 7 updates failing with error code 800736B3

I tried to troubleshoot it using the MS help box which was very little actual help, and then tried to initiate the update manually, however, when it comes to installing some windows 7 security and system updates and some IE updates, installation fails, resulting in error code 800736B3, whatever that means. If you bought your Win7 retail, you are entitled to MS excellent tech support which will work the case through to satisfaction. Those Updates are standard and can wait a few days.

however, every time I tell it to update then shut down it fails. The updates it fails on are:

I'm currently running avast! (v4.8 home edition) following win7 informing me that it would not allow AVG to run (it was from an 'untrusted source' apparently, despite having been working a few days previously), but thats another problem entirely

Any help than can be offered will be much obliged! All I've been able to turn up from googling is a command that un-registers windows, which then for some reason allows the updates to occur, following which I can use my original activation code (given to me by digital river with the student up...

Windows Update Posting Instructions

Since I'm new to this, I don't really know which files and logs to attach so if someone explained it to me I'll be able to post them ASAP

I'm not one of the experts you are needing but they will want you to do this first.

I'm now desperate and annoyed because of all this. You seem to have a lot of knowledge on these topics. Since the beginning of may (May 3rd) every update has failed and they've been stacking up to the point where there's now 25 updates I've missed.

Windows Updates Failed BITS failed to start error code 2147024894

Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads. Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.

anybody have any ideas?

Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

Error Code 800736B3 on SP1 Update

I can install all updates except for SP1. I ran the Update Troubleshooter, which claims to have repaired Win Update components - still same error. I ran sfc /scannow & no integrity violations were found. I also tried again after a clean boot - same error.

Any suggestions? I don't have a clue as to what to try now. I then successfully ran the hotfix KB947821.

This time I joined so I could post, as I have been unable to find a solution to my problem. Try reading here

Hopefully stuff in there will help.

I keep getting error 800736B3. The same error occurs.

I have lurked in this forum in the past - always finding answers.

error code 800736B3 installing SP1

Can anyone help me. After you have acepted the upgrade it will allow you to install the sp1 . Put the win7 disc in and choose upgrade then after that it will restart. After about a hour or two of updates it will install sp1 with no issue .

Once win7 has upgraded ,but still keeping your system in tact ,will start the whole update process.

Im getting this error code 800736B3. Also if you are useing a highend gaming card virus protect etc it might keep it from installing as well

Failed updates error code 80070490

Insert the Installation DVD. Reboot the machine > Run the automatic repair.

3. Open up an elevated administrator Command prompt. Run this command:
sfc /scannow
Let us know the results.

2.

The last thing i did was to rename the file for updates. I have been in touch with microsoft and followed all their instructns this is where i am at. As I don't know what instructions you were given by them;

1.

This did not work but has wiped clean all my update history and since then i am not recieving any updates at all, previously i was getting some but not the security updates. Boot the machien into Safemode with Networking, see what the updates says.

Updates failed, Error Code:8000FFFF

Not sure what to do, I've tried the following.
1. Next thing I know I get bombarded with 30 or more pop-ups telling me things like; "The cordinal 282 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll" among other similar messages. Most programs wont open anymore, chrome starts up but it wont connect anywhere. Manually uninstall all the updates that I installed today, I managed to delete all except two of them...

3.

EDIT: Added CBS.log!! http://www.sevenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/234159-windows-genuine-activation-issue-posting-instructions.html

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. To make it extra odd; the only reason I can type this message here is because Firefox still works perfect. Tried uninstalling those updates using CMD with wusa command, no success.

Scf /scannow - Found some corrupt DLL files, restarted and problem persists.

2. Several updates failed, I restarted computer as prompted. I should mention that I do not have System Restore or Backup activated... Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report.

The "cordinal 282" message shows up like shown in the attachment but several times with different programs.

So I casually installed some updates with Windows Update. All I get is this error message; "Installer encountered an error: 0x8007371c".

4.

The data is still ...

Updates Failed to install - Error Code 80071A91

My machine is a 5 year old Acer Aspire M3910 64 bit Intel Core i3 CPU 540 @3.07GHz with 8GB RAM running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Thank you in advance!

I have also run SFC /SCANNOW, but it identified no issues. How do I get over this?

I have been unable to install Windows updates since mid-December, and now have some 11 outstanding. I have downloaded and installed the System Update Readiness Tool from the Microsoft site. Help to resolve this updating error would be very much appreciated.

However the CBS.zip file generated from the CBS file produced by running this tool is some 12 MB in size and falls foul of the 8MB limit imposed by the forum, and I cannot attach it.

Microsoft updates failed error code 0x80070005

Having read another post I am pretty sure I am infected but the post was closed so, I apologize, I don't know how to fix the problem. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78A6528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. No one is ignored here.If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. Each one cleaned up some files but I still can't do windows updates or boot into safe mode et. I have already updated and ran McAfee, Spybot, Ad-Aware and CClaner.

Failed to install updates: Error Code 80070308

Any suggestions? I have spent this afternoon reading the other posts and following the Windows Update Posting Instructions thread so hopefully I've gathered has much info as I can. Attachment 325390

And I received the following error code.

I hope I have not missed anything out. Any help/advice would be appreciated. This resulted in the successful installation of: Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) but the failed installation of the other 9 updates as before.

Good Afternoon,

I am also having problems installing updates with the error code 80070308.

I downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness Tool. But please bear with me if I have. Attachment 325391

I then carried out the sfc/scannow which all came back OK. Kerry

This is becoming a common problem with the latest batch of updates - MS are looking into it (we are led to understand)
I'll add this thread to the action-list for our contact.

Once the installation was complete I tried to reinstall the updates. Attachment 325392

I have saved the logs as a zip file but its too big for me to upload (12.5MB)?
