TIP: You should click here to fix Windows errors and optimize system speed.

Working on a laptop computer gives you flexibility and portability. Since it is prone to frequent transfer, manufacturers make sure that their systems can withstand almost every risk including spills, transport and jostling. However, laptops are still prone to wear and tear both inside and outside. Laptop errors may include hard drive failure, system crash, not enough memory and virus infestation.

Apart from the time delays on your computer work and the lost productivity, there is also the issue of expenses to fix the errors, not to mention the calls to tech support. For fatal laptop errors, some cases may require you ship your laptop back to the manufacturer for repairs.

From the Forums

A user in the forum details it further:

Looks like formed plastic with a plastic label. From looking at it (from every possible angle) it does not appear to be a removeable item. I am trying to install a modem board on a compaq armada 7800. It says to remove the label on the top of keypad then remove the screws underneath.

Can anyone shed light on this for me? I'm perplex as to how remove these two hidden screws and complete this installation. Everything is great until I get to the remove keyboard assembly part. Series 2890B

What causes Laptop Modem Board

While laptop computers may be prone to errors, there are also quick fixes to most of these ailments. If your laptop experience slow hard drive processes like a sluggish file transfer or program load times, your solution is disk defragmentation. Upgrade your RAM if your computer needs more memory and has a slow performance when using several applications. If there is excessive pop-ups, your computer may be infected with a virus.

Run a free virus scan or install an anti-spyware program. When your hard drive failed and create a loud clicking sounds during data access from the hard drive, replace your hard drive or use an online backup site.

BB on-board modem recommendation?

But I've now run out of USB ports on my PC and my 4-way hub.I'm using the supplied 'free' USB modem, and was thinking I could get back a USB port if I buy an on-board BB modem. No,you need an ADSL PCI modem(or an ADSL modem/router combo)That item at PC World is just an Network Interface Card,to connect a PC to the Router/Hub,etc.
Is this thing click here at PC World for 9.99 the kind of thing I should be looking for?

Dell Latitude on board modem & NIC

Is there maybe a hardware 'switch' that will enable the on board NIC and modem??? The others don't list either one at all; no question marks, no red 'X', nada. Is there something I'm overlooking?

THANX! hd2k

Try a driver scanner on-line- I use
It might pick them up, and you can then get a driver from your favourite site. All are running WinXP Home SP1, and they all have built in modems and NICs. All the laptops are pretty much identical, and I went thru the BIOS on the 2 with the modem and NIC working, and compared the BIOS settings to the others, and the BIOS settings are identical.

But only 2 of the laptops have the modem and NIC listed in the device manager. I ran the New Hardware Wizard and that didn't do anything.

A friend recently acquired nine Dell Latitude C500/C600/C610 laptops. Any help, ideas, or suggestions will be appreciated!

Otherwise, I suggest you remove them, an the replace them one at a time to see if Windows finds them (I know its not so easy with laptops, but basically its only a matter of finding the screws if you have to go inside.)

Z modem and bulletin board system

When I contact the other party they tell me that I must use a "Z modem" in order to connect to their BBS. I am having issues with connection via dial up modem to a bulletin board system (BBS) using hyperterminal. I can't find any documentation anywhere that tells me whether or not my modem is a Z modem.

but nothing seems to help. In Hyperterminal, you will find it under 'Transfer', 'Send File' or 'Receive File'

I have tried playing around with port speed, emulation, buffers, etc. Does anyone have any information on this problem?

Zmodem is a transfer protocol.

I sometimes (very rarely) can actually connect and transmit data through this BBS, but most of the time it either doesn't connect or it does connect but I get gibberish in the hyperterminal window. I have a Conexant D850 56K V.92 DFVc modem that works properly for everything but this one bulletin board system. Are all recently manufactured modems Z modems?

I have a Dell XPS 710 system running Windows XP.

Tecra 9000 - Modem and Sound Board

The modem wasn't recognized any more.... What seems to be happening? Furthermore you can try to install the new driver for these devices.

But now it is the sound board that stopped working. After booting the OS should recognize the devices. Since the problem was not important I didn't take any actions. It isn't recognized by the OS any more.

Software or hardware problems? If this action doesn?t help, you can try to reinstall your system with the Recovery CD.

I have a Tecra 9000 that had a problem a cople of months ago. Bye

First of all you can try to delete these two devices (modem, soundcard) from the Device Manager.

Solved: Cable modem to DSL back to cable modem-now my laptop can't connect to interne

Funny thing is my hard wired computer has picked up same network name thru modem and is working fine both thru ethernet and wifi (this computer I am using first time with this modem). Any help?

The problem is with my laptop which I tried to connect wirelessly but coudn't so I tried to connect it thru ethernet but it does not even recognizes it. I tried most of the solutions by calling Suddenlink and Motorola but no luck.

I am wordering if it has to do anything with centurylink's DSL modem being used on this laptop before and somehow blocking cable modem? I used cable modem Motorola SURFboard SBG6580 and it was working fine. My laptop find available networks and when I select my network with password, some time it says connected with limited access and some time "windows was unable to connect" message.

Now I moved to another city and used same cable modem (SBG6580) and connected my business PC thru ethernet and it is working fine. Then I changed my ISP to Century Link and used their DSL modem and still everything worked just fine.

Laptop System board

or how much use it's had, but both problems are certainly something that can happen with age and continuous use. Both the keyboard and the CD drive are replaceable items, but the work may not be cost-effective in an old machine.

Laptop Power Board

After having talked to the manufacturer service dept and finding out that they will charge about twice what I paid for a repair, I took the thing apart and found a smoked capacitor on what appears to be a power supply board. The next boot it came up black. Call the manufacturer again and ask them to sell you just the part as long as you know what it is. Most of them will be glad to send you one or point you to a depot center where u can buy one.

When I booted it up I heard a "hissing" like noise and the display came up dark but under a bright light I could see the wallpaper and icons.

I have a CompUSA notebook with a screen that has gone black. Does anyone know of a source for parts?

SONY Support Country Selection Page

You have a European version. Mike

all of these i had to copy and paste. You will need to go to the above link and find the 64bit driver for the keyboard. Now bear in mind i have 32 bit on another partition and it works fine. UK isn't listed as available there so select the country on the first page.

i just installed win 7 ultimate 64bit on my Sony VAIO VGN-FW31E laptop. but 64bit i have a broblem with my keyboard. Install on the Win 7 64bit.

Sony MBX-30 laptop board identification

Is there anybody out there with Sony knowledge who might be able to help me id this board and the needed cpu so I can get back in business? I tried to buy a cheap replacement from ebay but by mistake I bought the wrong MBX-30 board (1-675-068-21) and the my pcg-370 450mhz cpu doesn't work in it. Sony refuses to tell me which PCG-FXXX model the 1-675-068-21 MBX-30 board is from that I bought by mistake.

Thus, I cannot buy the appropriate cpu so that I can get up and running again.

water spilled on laptop key board

I spilled some water on my hp laptop. The laptop is a HP Pavilion Entertainment and runs Vista. I turned it upside down immediately and shaked it a little so the water would come out and left it upside down all weekend.

Turned it on today and it works perfectly EXCEPT I have no sound. I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions. I did all the trouble shooting I knew and the computer says everything is working fine. Could water spilled on the laptop cause the sound to go out.
