How To Fix Microsoft update : 0x8007007E on Windows 7

TIP: You should click here to fix Windows errors and optimize system speed.

Seeing an error when you work on your computer is not an instant cause of panic. It is not unusual for a computer to encounter problems but it is also not a reason to let it be and not to investigate on the errors. Windows errors are issues that can be fixed through solutions depending on what may have caused them in the first place. Some may only need a quick fix of re-installation of the system while others may require in-depth technical assistance. It is crucial to react to the signals on your screen and investigate the problem before trying to fix it.

A lot of users experience difficulties in installing Windows software updates. Most of the time, the update error message doesn’t tell you anything helpful to fix the issue. One the most common update error is “Windows could not search for new updates” plus an error code “80240442”. Updates are important as they deliver hotfixes, security patches and other improvements. Therefore, it is vital to install them when they are available.

Microsoft has streamlined the update process in the recent versions of Windows. However, this does not mean that update errors are totally out of the picture especially with issues relating to compatibility.

Windows 7 is the operating system released by Microsoft, following the Windows Vista. However, despite its later technology, there are still errors encountered in Windows 7. Sometimes, problems occur even during an installation or an upgrade. A common example is when you upgrade your Windows Vista to Windows 7 and after more than 50%, it will fail or hang. Other Windows 7 errors are caused when you incorrectly install or uninstall a program. When there are errors in your Window 7, a pop up error message will appear once you start your computer. Windows 7 error that are not fixed will make it annoying to perform other task including hardware functions.

A user in the forum details it further:

I have an 0x8007007E error while trying to use Microsoft Update on IE8. However, Windows update (the one built in windows) works but it only gives me updates for windows. Windows Update should take care of updating IE8, it is a change from the former way of doing updates. I have an 0x8007007E error while trying to use Microsoft Update on IE8.

P.S. - Sorry for the delay in responding, but it looks like the issue is solved for you. However, Windows update (the one built in windows) works but it only gives me updates for windows. Welcome to Seven Forums, albanderuaz.

What causes Microsoft update : 0x8007007E on Windows 7

Whenever you see windows error on your screen, the easiest and safest way to fix it is to reboot your computer. Just like our bodies needing a shut eye for several minutes, our computers also need to shut down once in awhile. A quick reboot can refresh your programs and gives your computer a clean slate to start a new venture. More often than not, it also eliminates the errors you have encountered after rebooting. It is also ideal to shut down your computer once a week to completely put all unused programs to rest. However, when a reboot does not work anymore, use more advanced Windows solutions to fix your errors.

It is important to always run a system diagnostic scan when Windows Updates fail to download or install in order to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. Microsoft provides a troubleshooter for Windows Update related errors that will detect the problem and most likely can automatically fix it. However, there are always these type of errors that are hard to pin down.

Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot the problem and fix it.

  1. Clear up your Temporary Files and Internet Cache and reboot.
  2. Disable your Firewall and Anti-virus software.
  3. Use the Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter to reset Windows Updates settings to defaults.
  4. Flush the Software Distribution Folder.
  5. Reset the Catroot folder.
  6. Boot in Clean Boot State and run Windows Update again.

One of the first step to fix Windows 7 errors is to check all your drivers in the Device Manager and make sure that these drivers are updated. You can also run the Program Compatibility Wizard. It is a built-in troubleshooter that will help users fix errors in Windows 7. Check the Wizard under the Start menu. For legacy software, you can check the Compatibility tab of the program to edit the settings.

Other fixes in Windows 7 error include:

  1. Running a Clean Boot Using Microsoft Guided Help
  2. Manually Running a Windows Update
  3. Conduct a Microsoft Hotfix
  4. Download and Install Microsoft’s automated patch

Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform.

The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374). If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates. I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others... Is this worth doing?

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Hope this helps you out!

So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update a...

Unable to update Microsoft Windows or get to Microsoft Update

Please help?I've been working on a friend's computer and have exceeded my level of expertise.  This computer has been anti-virus-less for several years.  I have installed, updated, and run scans using McAfee Security Center, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and SuperAntiSpyware in both regular Windows mode and in Safe mode.  The last set of scans were clean.  Automatic update is turned on, but doesn't work.  When an update is attempted manually, IE says "The page cannot be displayed"Here is my HijackThis log:Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 2:34:56 PM, on 7/9/2010Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP3 (6.00.2900.5512)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exeC:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exeC:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Mcafee\McSvcHost\McSvHost.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\Motive\McciCMService.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\SystemCore\mfevtps.exeC:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfService.exeC:\Program Files\Common Files\McAfee\SystemCore\mfefire.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEc:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exeC:\Pr...

Today I tried to log on my home pc but when I try logging in a error comes up saying A problem is preventing windows for accurately checking the licence for this computer Error Code 0x8007007e, then it immediatly logs me back out. Kind Regards,
In the "Safe Mode" Menu select the option "Last Known Good Configuration", and follow the on-screen prompts.

Error 0x8007007e

Mod Edit:  Split from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/513138/unable-to-logon-a-problem-is-preventingchecking-license/ - Hamluis.

I have the same problem, and since the proposed fix is shown, thought I would continue the question [since fix cannot be done].

Have been using XP SP2 and installed SP3 several weeks ago.  All was working great, therefore I backed up my work via Ghost....several times.  I did have a problem though that prompted me to restore back to an earlier restore point, several times and different restore points and all worked fine.

The last time though I thought the problem I was having might be due to SP3, so I restored to a restore point that was created before I installed SP3.  When the computer rebooted, I received the error code above 0x8007007e  Warning states that the license cannot be verified.  I do have the license on the shiny mirrored sticker that is on the box for the original disk.  I can get to the user log in screen [I am the only one who has used this computer since it was new and I have the discs that came with it new] and after logging in, it shows the error code and shuts down.  I cannot get into the computer to even attempt to fix by the suggested fix.

I really like my old clogger [have a new Macbook Pro but prefer the old MS].  I need help to solve....please.  [If this should be posted new...let me know and I can do that.]

Microsoft hides mystery Firefox extension in toolbar update As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update...

It's also not really clear what the installed extension actually does. The update also installs an add-on for Internet Explorer and an extension for Mozilla Firefox, both without the user's permission. Let us all see which company gits back to B/C with some sort of answer.

As for Firefox can't I just delete the extension.

As you can see in the Windows Update screenshot above, Microsoft does not indicate that the update will install anything for either browser. http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010...lbar-update.ars As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update for its various toolbars, and this update came with more than just documented fixes.
You may want to check, but on my Vista I don't see any new add-on and I don't even have C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack folder.

Microsoft Announces New Monthly Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Creators Update

Microsoft says that although it wants to release one such cumulative update every month (in addition to the security release on Patch Tuesday), there might be cases when more than a single extra cumulative update is shipped, depending on the bugs that it needs to fix. You can simply ignore these updates
The software giant explains that Windows 10 users getting these updates will be allowed to deploy them just like the updates that are shipped on Patch Tuesday, but at the same time, be provided with options to deploy each of them only to a subset of devices.

?This enables the organization to ensure that these new non-security fixes work well, prior to those same fixes being included in the next ?Update Tuesday? cumulative update which will be deployed throughout the organization,? the company explains. Today, the company announced that it would publish a second cumulative update for businesses running Windows 10 Creators Update, this time including non-security fixes.

Microsoft Announces New Monthly Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Creators Update

Microsoft rolls out new cumulative updates every month on Patch Tuesday, including here not only security fixes targeting vulnerabilities in Windows 10 and installed Microsoft software, but also OS improvements and other tweaks refining the overall experience. Additionally, there?s the option not to deploy the updates at all because Windows 10 systems will eventually get the included improvements anyway with ...

Can't reinstall Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Update won't update

I made another post more in depth about it here, but I feel like I might not get any good help.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions, I'd really appreciate it!! I didn't think much of it, but now I feel like it's affecting MSE.

Recently I had an issue with updating it, so I had to uninstall it via the Microsoft Support website because I couldn't uninstall it normally. But when I triy to reinstall it, it gets to about the point where it seems like it's installing, and then it stops and says there was an error with the installation. I've tried just about every suggestion and troubleshooting that the Microsoft website offers me, but nothing seems to be working.

I've ran Malware Bytes, Windows Defender, TDSSKiller, and even Microsoft Security Scanner; nothing detects any malware or spyware, so I'm getting the feeling that something might be corrupted!

Attach to your post the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your Desktop
You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like

For about the past two years I've been having troubles with Windows Update, and it's pretty much stopped checking for updates and updating in general.

Unable to switch from Windows Update to Microsoft Update

I finally found an answer that works in another thread:  Install Silverlight and at the end of the install process make sure that the box is checked to 'Update Silverlight and other Microsoft products' How do I get this machine to switch to Microsoft Update? To verify that I am able to install updates for Office I manually downloaded and installed one Office 2013 update through the Microsoft download site.

On a new Windows 7 64 bit computer I am unable to access Microsoft updates. I have also tried other links to Microsoft Update from other Microsoft webpages and end up with the same result. I have Office 2013 Standard installed and activated, and from previous installation experience know that I should be able to access numerous updates through this method. Windows update works fine, but when I click the link to get updates for other Microsoft Products it will only take me to the screen that tells me to use the start menu to check for
updates.

However when following those steps I noticed my Windows Update will not update, and hasnt done since May! If I click on update the green bar moves but never gets anywhere, ive left it for 15min+ and it just keeps saying its checking for update. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. I dont know anything about computers and have no idea how to go about investigating this myself so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear.
