A user in the forum details it further:
I'm currently using: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Microsoft Wireless Keyboard 1000 YAMAHA speakers YST-M15 (really old model) Realtek High Definition Audio Driver 126.96.36.19959 ASUS M3A78-EM Motherboard I'm really confused because if all the multimedia keys are working then it should not be a driver problem. I tried using the default Microsoft sound driver and the latest Realtek sound driver but still no luck. The roll back driver option is greyed out in Device Manager so I don't assume that is the problem.. However, when I press the mute/unmute button, the volume bar shows up, but does not actually mute.
If the volume up/down is working then it should not be speaker problem. It is ONLY the mute button that is not working. I also tried turning HID services on and off but still the same BUT, I remember the mute button WORKING until a few days ago.
It seems like it flashed the mute symbol for half a second but it still just stay unmute. I don't know if it is due to the Windows Update, or something to do with my motherboard driver or something else.
What causes Responding to Keyboard Mute button, but does not mute?

Mute button show orange light regardless of sound/mute statu...
The light on this button has always been dark when volume was on, and orange during mute. This condition seems to have started with recent, unknown update. Don't know if it is a keyboard issue or sound driver issue. Can't find drivers for either on HP drive download site.

When I press it, it just shows the volume bar. It does not even increase or decrease the volume. After that, the button does not work at all.

Keyboard Mute Button Doesn't Work
I have the latest drivers and apps installed from Logitech. After that, hitting the Mute key has no effect at all. I don't have any USB KB's that have extra keys like that, the one I got is an old HP keyboard.
I'm wondering if anyone else is having these problems, and/or if anyone has suggestions. But the problem started again shortly afterward (maybe a week or two).
I have Windows 8.1 Pro and a Logitech K800 Keyboard (wireless/illuminated) and I'm continuing to be frustrated by the fact that the Mute button does not work. There should be software for that keyboard.
I have searched Google for a solution but nothing matches my problem. After a reboot, the first time I hit the Mute key momentarily mutes the sound but then the sound returns (maybe after 1 second). Oddly there are reports of all volume-related keys not working, but the Volume up and Volume down keys still work for me. Try this:
Support + Downloads: Wireless Illuminated Keyboard K800 - Logitech
Check the Logitech site, see if there are drivers for that particular KB. Some Keyboards that have extra keys work without added software, if they are a PS/2 KB. Oddly enough, I had the same problem with a previous Windows 8.0 Pro install -- it went away when I upgraded to Windows 8.1.
T410/T510 Keyboard mute button
We have recently completed our image for the T410/T510 platform running Windows XP and have just run into something that I was wondering if anyone else had. During our testing, one of our apps was showing some strange behavior on the new platforms. We finally figured out that it was a conflict that the application was having with the Lenovo Hotkey software. Our thinking at that time is that this was a "nice" to have while the application was a "need" to have so we removed the software. This has been running fine and we have rolled out a few hundred laptops, but now have one issue. When the software is installed, if you press the mute button on the keyboard, windows sees that and turns on the mute. If you press the volume button on the keyboard, the mute in windows turns off as does the light on the mute button. Without the software installed, if you have pressed the mute button, the light turns on just like normal. However, if you press the volume button at that point, then the light on the mute button turns off, but Windows does not turn off the mute. If you press the mute button on the keyboard, then the light comes back on, but Windows then turns off the mute. Anyone else have this issue? Eric Krueger
Keyboard Buttons (mute button etc, dont work)
this give shows me that there is bad quality and handling from the manufacturer's end ... Solved! Turn on the system and start hitting F2. now go under Configuration tab, check and make sure that the Hotkey mode is enabled.
If those damages are inflicted from Lenovo repair facility you can get the Lenovo Case number from future shop and report this damage on your system's Top cover to Lenovo Technical Support.
I'm pretty sure if this is Depot Departments fault Lenovo would do what is necessary to revert this.
You can contact Lenovo Technical Support.

As well another thing not relating to this issue, I also noticed between the bottom case and top case that there is small chipped corners and dinks randomly all around the laptop after receiving it from repair, I can provide photos for further clearance, but why the poor quality service? Can't turn mute button off laptop quickplay keyboard
My computer knowledge is probably above average, but I'm no techie. It has a QuickPlay keyboard (LED buttons) above the laptop keyboard, including a mute key (glows orange). I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop. Oh yeah, OS is Vista.
Visited Logitech help and HP help and can't find an answer. Just added a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard, and now can't get the mute button to go off...so, I now have no sound on the laptop! Anyone know where I should start?
Keyboard mute button not working in new user account
It only doesn't work in the new account. A second reboot worked. The volume up and down buttons work, and if I log into my old user account the mute button still works there.
Any advice would be appreciated. D'oh!
Pressing the mute button causes "Mute" or "Unmute" to appear on the screen briefly, but the sound does not mute or un-mute.
I created a new user account on my PC (running Win 8.1), and the mute button on my wireless keyboard does not work on the new account.
Win7/t400s: Can not start "Lenovo Microphone Mute" service + MIC-Mute key not working!
Some services stop automatically because it is not used by other programs or services". I suppose this is the reason why also my MIC mute buton doesn't do anything. Ok, i figured it out myself. When you use Lenovo's system update to install/update all Lenovo packages after a fresh windows 7 install, then the hotkey drivers are installed before or simultaniously with the System Interface Driver. I also tried to manually uninstall and reinstall the hotkey drivers without any success. I read some more similar issues on this forum and on the internet, but not a clear solutions.
So i followed this procedure to fix it: Uninstalled the System Interface Driver via Windows Programs configuration screenRebootUninstall the hotkey drivers via the horkey installation program (and select "remove installation")RebootRe-install the System Interface DriverRebootRe-install the hotkey driversReboot Now open the System Manegement -> Services window and verify that the Lenovo Microphone Mute service is running. If so you can now operate the MIC-Mute button and when pressed it also will show the amber led when it is muted. Regards, Jan

No OSD for mute,+/- (green bar), mic mute. All keys works!
just below graphics which I cannot turn off?! When I remove "On Screen Display" in Programs/Remove both OSD tabs disappear. Tried to reinstall both drivers (power and integrated keys) and nothing - stays the same for me... :-(
Solved! All hotkeys works fine (communications Fn-F5, camera/mic Fn-F6) even all the sound buttons except all OSD of those sound buttons are gone (mute,+/-, mic mute) :-( Caps lock/Num Lock/Scroll Lock OSD works doubled - it shows graphicallly which I can turn on/off in OSD at Change Resolution/Advanced (OSD tab is doubled there) and by text CapsLock/NumLock/ScrollLock On/OFF etc. Go to Solution.
