Dell Inspiron 545 / 9148 4 gb ram Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 (2.4GHz, 4MB Cache) and i will buy graphics card to go with for arounf 60 pund prob a PNY GeForce 9500GT 512MB PCI-E will this run wow and counterstrike   It will "run" them, but you should really consider something a little more capable, ATI HD4830 is a considerably better but not significantly more expensive, after that the 9600GT but would just go to the HD4850 or HD4770. Simple answer is yes it would, but would recommend better.

BSOD when running some games, not when running other games

The procedure:

* Copy the contents of \Windows\Minidump to another (temporary) location somewhere on your machine.
* Zip up the copy.
* Attach the ZIP archive to your post using the "paperclip" (file attachments) button.
*If the files are too large please upload them to a file sharing service like "Rapidshare" and put a link to them in your reply. I used a blue screen viewer and uploaded a screenshot of it so my friend could see it, but he couldn't figure it out.

Hey, I'm not sure what's happening.

I'll put it here to see if anyone can help me with it. To enable us to assist you with your computer's BSOD symptoms, upload the contents of your "\Windows\Minidump" folder. If you are overclocking STOP

You may be able to get the DMP files without crashing by booting into safe mode (F8) with networking. Please attach the DMP files to your next post not to post one.

C:\windows (the dmp should be called memory.dmp), and C:\windows\LiveKernelReports\Watchdog. To ensure minidumps are enabled:

* Go to Start, in the Search Box type: sysdm.cpl, press Enter.
* Under the Advanced tab, click on the Startup and Recovery Settings... If empty (or non existent) please look in the following folders.

The only way that card is going to get 60 FPS in games like that is at lower settings and a resolution less than 1280x1024.

Is my computer too weak?

With my computer specs I feel like i should be able to max out graphics and run the games on 60 FPS, cause my friend can max his games and we have the same specs. And yes I have the LATEST DRIVERS for everything in my computer.

Whats wrong with my computer? Hate to say it but you're expecting high end performance from a mid range card.

Games not running like they used to

Is there a windows setting that limits all programs from taking their required resources?

Another effort you should try: Reset all your games' settings to default.

The computer was used the day before with no problem on the same game, no background programs (aside from Steam and essentials) were running.

-- What I have tried --
- Virus Scans, with AVG and Kaspersky
- Un-installed Psychonauts and every software he installed while he was here
- Defragged and cleaned my registry and hard-drive
- Updated all of my computer's drivers (especially my graphics)
- Dusted my entire computer and got it more air (even though it had no heating issues)

-- What I have also noticed --
When these games are running, popping Task Manager up on another screen shows me that the games are only using about 8 to 10% of my processors capacity, and about 10 to 13% of my graphics memory, and even less RAM.

-- Question --
What the heck happened?

Running XP games in Win 7

I have to believe there are lots of others who feel the same way.

This is actually a "sticky" (TerryNet please note). Hope others find this helpful.

Well, I noticed, but copying files from one version of Windows to another version probably violates some clause in the small (tiny) print of Microsoft's Windows license.

I like to play the games that come with Windows (Solitaire, Hearts, FreeCell, etc.). DO NOT PASTE THEM TO THE SYSTEM32 FOLDER ON THE WIN 7 COMPUTER! So, while I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one who likes to while away some time playing these rather mindless games I think that a sticky is not appropriate. It wasn't until the HD on my XP desktop died and I had to use the laptop for everything that I discovered that it's possible to use XP-style games on a Win 7 computer without having to resort to XP mode.

Besides, I got used to the Windows 7 versions of Solitaire and Minesweeper three years ago.

The first time I tried to play them on my Win 7 laptop, I was appalled at how M$ had utterly/completely destroyed the playability of the games with fancy cards that were hard to decipher, very slow play, and restrictions to the way right-clicks used to work. Simply go to C:\Windows\system32 on an XP computer and copy the game files (cards.dll, freecell.dll, mshearts.dll, sol.exe, spider.chm, spider.exe and winmine.exe) to a jump drive, create a new folder on your Win 7 computer, paste the ...

Running '95 games on XP

Currently running them on the worst computer I have, on Windows XP. I can open the menu, however when I select PLAY, the screen goes black (as if it were about to run) but then returns to windows and an error that reads "This program failed to run." shows.

Try this app: dosbox

The game I would most like to get running is Math Blasters (yes, ages 4-6), which runs at 640x480 resolution and 256 colors.

I think the main problem has something to do with the 32-bit and 16-bit incompatibility, but I'm really not sure how to go about getting this to run. I have used the compatibility wizard, but it didn't do anything. Some I could, some I couldn't.

So I just pulled out a huge pile of my old Windows 95 games and I wanted to play a few.

Running 32 Bit Games on Win 7 Pro 64 Bit?

I just upgraded from Win 7 Home Premium to Win 7 Professional. There seems to be a problem running a 32-bit program. I am unable to run some games that used to run on Win XP in virtual XP Mode. Can I somehow run 32 bit programs in my setup?

Running old DOS games

Does it work?

Running Games W/No CD?

All of the games have be installed from their cd files on the HD so I dont know why it wont look there! Check out GameCopyWorld.

I got one game to run that way but it asked where the files are and I gave it the path to the HD files. I dont really want to keep switching disks.

How we'll are my games running?

Personally, I don't have any issues with it at max settings @ 1900x1080 on a 1st gen i5, 4Gb RAM, Win7 Home premium (64bit) and a GTX460, but there is alot of talk of bad code optimisation and quite a lot of talk on the official forums from people with much better rigs getting what they perceive as very poor performance. graphic settings, average FPS

-The witcher 2
-GTA4 ( I'm aware of the know graphical issues with this game but still curious)
-Crysis 2
-Champions Online
-Arkham City
-The Sims 3 (apparently needs patching but not sure)

I'm not actually having many drastic issues with ALL these games, some i am, some i wish was performing a bit better

Obviously i'm not expecting a full list (unless you want to)
Also if anyone knows of any issues with theses games (Meaning requires patch) thats not hardware related please let me know in case im unaware of them. i was wondering if people can take a look at my specs and let me know how the games on the list should be running ie.

i think i've fixed a lot of the issues as performance has increased but i know it's not back to full potential. I have also played Skyrim without a problem on the same machine, not for a while though so can't remember exactly what graphics settings although Im pretty sure it wasn't maxed out.

Running big games on W98

But as soon as i told it to run the game i got a message saying something about graphics card failure although windows still worked fine and I could see the desktop fine.Any suggestions?
I installed The Sims 2 on my W98 PC recently. Insallation ran fine.

is your graphics card on this listclick here

Games not running ........................

Do you have a restore point prior to it happening? I have just reinstalled Doom 3 again to see if it fixed the fault - nothing. System Restore Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

I am wondering if this coincided with my running CCleaner a few days ago, all went haywire after that, so I uninstalled CCleaner.

Something has changed in win 10 on my pc. Games that have been running perfectly suddenly are telling me that I have to 'use administrator privileges' to play and are refusing to open.

Running Old Games

I doubt they will run in Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. Can I run these games using Windows 98 in a VM. Games such as Space Quest ,Kings Quest to name a few. The problem is that virtual system probably can't do the graphics really well so the game might fail.

I am sure you can spend time and find some solution. If you have Windows 8 Pro then you can try installing it in built-in Hyer-V but there can be limitations to it. If so; What Vm do you recommend I use? I do have an old copy of Windows 98 SE.

Previous OS that worked with game with the Key then you can use Hyper-V
Here is Link on how to get started:
Run virtual machines on Windows 8 with Client Hyper-V - Microsoft Windows

One you get your virtual System of Windows 98 (or vista, win7) then you just install the game on it.

I came across a box of old computer games I played years ago. The first thing is to try the compatibility wizard to see if that works then proceed to VM. Here blog post on why Hyper V has problems with 3-D games:
Understanding High-End Video Performance Issues with Hyper-V - Ben Armstrong - Site Home - MSDN Blogs

You can do a search on how to run a game in a virtualized box system whether through a virtual OS or some type of emulator that some person develop for games.

Other People Recommend VM player so give that a try.

Games are not running like they used too.

And with an ISO my monitor shuts off either when trying to go to safe mode or just trying to clean install. I tried using a tv in case it was my monitor but that didn't work either. One day it wouldn't turn on and I realized that it was probably because the CPU wasn't working, I opened it all up and cleaned everything and all the dust, and that made it turn on.

But not even though it turns on my games are not working properly, they all turn on but the frame rates are so bad and some just don't hardly even work. In the settings it stops and reverts back to how it was before I started the installation.

I built a pc sometime last year and everything was fine until about a couple months ago. Any suggestions would help I'm not the best at the tech side of PCs.

And now I wanted to try reinstalling my windows but no matter which way I try to do that it doesn't work.
