A mistake or inaccuracy, an error is caused about by committing miscalculations on the things that you do. It is a state of having a wrong judgement or conception in your conduct that allows catastrophic things to happen. In machines, error is a way to measure the difference between the observed value or the computed value of an event against its real value.

It is a deviation from correctness and accuracy. When errors occur, machines crash, computers freeze and softwares stop working. Errors are mostly unintentional events to happen. Most of the time, errors are a result of poor management and preparation.

Having a sign that tells us of issues that we need to solve in life for us to move forward is a great idea. While it does not always work in life, it does in computers. Messages that indicate the issues your computer encounters are called error codes. They appear whenever there is a problem such as incorrect data input or faulty hardware. Computer programmers add predefined error codes and messages in their system codes so whenever there is an issue, it prompts the users. While error codes may be predefined, there are different sets of error codes with different meanings for other kinds of computer programs.

A lot of users experience difficulties in installing Windows software updates. Most of the time, the update error message doesn’t tell you anything helpful to fix the issue. One the most common update error is “Windows could not search for new updates” plus an error code “80240442”. Updates are important as they deliver hotfixes, security patches and other improvements. Therefore, it is vital to install them when they are available.

Microsoft has streamlined the update process in the recent versions of Windows. However, this does not mean that update errors are totally out of the picture especially with issues relating to compatibility.

What causes Updates fail - BITS won't start. "error code -2147024894"

It is important to always run a system diagnostic scan when Windows Updates fail to download or install in order to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. Microsoft provides a troubleshooter for Windows Update related errors that will detect the problem and most likely can automatically fix it. However, there are always these type of errors that are hard to pin down.

Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot the problem and fix it.

  1. Clear up your Temporary Files and Internet Cache and reboot.
  2. Disable your Firewall and Anti-virus software.
  3. Use the Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter to reset Windows Updates settings to defaults.
  4. Flush the Software Distribution Folder.
  5. Reset the Catroot folder.
  6. Boot in Clean Boot State and run Windows Update again.

No updates fail code "WindowsUpdate_80073712"

So now I have 2 problems.

1: why am I getting "WindowsUpdate_80073712" "WindowsUpdate_dt000" when my updates fail,
2: Why aren't I getting 64 bit internet explorer when it does update?

November, 2016 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3197869 is just the latest of failed windows updates with this code "WindowsUpdate_80073712" "WindowsUpdate_dt000" that comes up. windows update is taking me back to IE 11o the updates but is leaving out the 64 bit versions now. Ironicly I am having the same problem with my desktop running vista but no one wants to here about vista problems.

Still the windows update is not working right since last June is when I started getting failed updates and now it's heading onto Christmas. Any good ideas really would be appreciated. It's probably a corrupted windows update but I thought I did everything the right way to fix that.

I've had windows IE 11 64 bit, but after trying everything I could find on fixing the problem I rolled back internet explorer, it went all the way back to IE 8. Thank you all and sorry for the long details

Maybe I can try to find a stand alone IE 11 64 bit version to download instead of windows updates version, we'll see. the only updates i'm getting are from Microsoft's Security Essentials.

Greetings all, tearing my hair out over this. I'm sure it's had malware infections in the past.

It's x64, for the record. For more information, review the System Event Log. But I think a previous malware infestation screwed up the BITS service to the point now where it will not start. I didn't notice this until I tried to run Windows update.

cannot start event viewer "Error code 1899"

I can't believe no one has anything to offer on this issue! This issue has effectively stopped me from doing any back up on my PC as without the Event logging service or Event viewer service running the Back up cannot be set as it's dependent on these services which are hog tied by this endpoint mapper issue! Suddenly, nothing happened!! I have done a SFC and have had some but not all issues fixed, I have a log of the result and maybe could post if needed.

Another Windows endless catch 22 loop!! Has anyone had experience with this issue and know a fix for it? I've seen this issue raised on several forums but as yet no one seems to have the solution, which begs the question where are all the experts out there specializing in Windows 7?

It's no wonder people slag off Microsoft for the lack of support. I've also done a system restore to a previous working config but no luck, the problem still persists.

Can't click on "Check for Updates" "Windows Update settings" on Start

3. In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done. Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

2. Spanker,

As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10. Which one of the above is applicable to you ?

When sfc /scannow is completed, it will give you one of the following 3 reports....................(paraphrasing)

1. From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though. Please clarify what did you mean by "no results".

Getting "Strike f1 to retry boot" "Error Code 0141 - No Drive Detected"

I've read resetting the BIOS is a possible solution, but I'm not sure what the next step is at this point.Any help would be greatly appreciated.* UPDATE: I just ran a diagnostics test and it said Error Code 0141 - No Drive Detected Its having issues detecting the hard drive. I'm running Windows 7 on a DELL XPS. I don't know if I did the combination work or something, but I tried a variety of combos and none of them seemed to work.

Before this happened a disk scan was running and I reset the computer before it was finished. The system sensed an issue with the drive before it died and it attempted a scandisk to try to repair, and right now it sounds like the issue with the drive got worse from the point in which the system detected a scandisk was necessary to correct for errors. What is the exact make/model number of this computer?Curious as to why you didnt allow it to finish properly? Did it take forever getting hung at a certain point of the scandisk in which you told it to reboot because it was not progressing further?

It restarted the first time, but by the time I got back to the computer it was on the "Strike f1 to retry boot" screen.I've tried turning on CAPS LOCK, NUM LOCK & SCROLL LOCK and hitting ALT - E,F,B, but that did not seem to work. I also tried reloading the default settings in the Boot options menu and that did not seem to help either. I have a strong feeling you will need to replace the hard drive. I'm currently going to school for computers and so I really like to apply what I learn in real world situations, but this one has got me stumped!

To anyone that can help me out:

I purchased a windows anytime upgrade key and upgraded my system from windows 7 home premiuim to windows 7 ultimate now when my windows tries to update I get this: (See image titled "message")

To bring you up to speed as to what I've done so far:
I ran sfc\scannow and no errors were found
I downloaded the hotfixes and apllied them and still could not update
I tried to do a system restore to the point before I upgraded, but I could not perform one because all of my previous attempts to update windows automatically creates a system restore and all the restore points were within a 24 hour period
I installed a system update readiness tool as per "windows help and support" dialogue box

To see the updates that did not install, refer to the image titled "update"

Really, I feel like I've done my homework and I've exhausted my efforts as to how to fix this problem.

Windows Update error code 80070490 and message "Windows can't check for updates"

The last successful update was on 13.09.2013. I use Windows Vista Home basic 32 bit, Service Pack 2. All updates made before and on 13 September are written as "successful" in "Update history" folder, but when I open "Installed Updates" folder, I don't see nothing and there is written "No updates are installed on this computer", which is strange, because by this moment Windows Update was made automatically without any problems. Now I am really out of ideas what to do

Today I used again the System Update Readiness Tool and the CheckSur file showed this:
Checking System Update Readiness.

Windows Update error code 80070490 appeared on 20 September 2013 and message "Windows can't check for updates". ps.: On 23 of September I reinstalled Windows Update Software from Microsoft Web Page:
Microsoft Update
and the notification message " Windows can't check for updates" from my taskbar dissapeared and never appeared again, so..i thought the problem is solved, but yesterday evening(13 October) when i opened Widnows Update in my Control Panel and pressed "Check for updates" it started to seek for updates but after some time again showed me the same error code and the same message "Windows could not search for new updates". I asked for help also on Microsoft Community forum, but didn't receive help . seems Windows still doesn't updat...

Solved: Error Message:"The network password needs to be 40 bits r 104 bits depending.

at a hotel I run). The router is a brand spankin new Linksys EA4500 and the laptop is an IBM which is running Win XP (not sure of SP version as it is a customer's comp. Thank you as always for the the knowledge...

You are using WPA or WPA2 encryption and the laptop--because of the lack of at least service pack 2, incorrect wireless driver, or old wireless adapter--does not support WPA(2).

This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters

At first I thought is was my router password since it contained a $ symbol so I changed it to only letters and numbers but still didn't work.

Anyway, the error message I am encountering is:

The network password needs to be 40 bits r 104 bits depending on your network configuration. I have never encountered this error message on any laptops and no other rooms have been affected.

Error "network password needs to be in 40 or 140 bits"

I tired to connect to my wireless router with a laptop, and I get "network password needs to be in 40 or 140 bits depending on your network" error message. It's the password and login they set for the thing. I'm using the password on the netgear box, for gods sake.

How do I connect my laptop to this thing? It's wpa2, and about 3 others. It's a netgear n-300, that I just bought about month ago. I'm running windows xp.

have you tried removing the security completely and connecting and then add the security again

and then change the security to WPA or WPA2 and use a strong password - so not just dictionary words

I hear you have to go back to WEP, but there is no wep option in the router settings.

Error code "0xc000000e" "The boot selection failed because a required device.........

Unfortunately, I've been running in to some problem(s) when I try to launch with the IDE in place. But something some how screwed up the boot sequence in my system, and where everything was pretty much "outdated." I just went ahead and did another build. Though after a 15-20sec lapse I'll get an error screen displaying an windows error code of "0xc000000e" with a prompt message below stating "The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible"

I searched all over online to see what that error code represents, only to get "pages after pages" of sites with each site telling me something different.

Though, since then I've been pondering around with the thought of using a SATA to IDE adapter so that I can retrieve what ever salvageable data I can from one of the two HDD's that was in my last build. I have no intentions of using this as a third HDD in my system. I just want to retrieve select data from it.

So I finally broke down and ordered a couple different one's earlier this week.

Wasn't certain what exactly the problem was at the time. Upon initial launching, the boot sequence seem to take some time longer than it normally does with out the IDE HDD in place.

Mods, if you feel that this thread is more of a "Windows" issue, please feel free to move this thread. Here last year I did my second build because I was having "boot" issues. <...
