How To Fix Updates Failed to install - Error Code 80071A91

TIP: You should click here to fix Windows errors and optimize system speed.

A mistake or inaccuracy, an error is caused about by committing miscalculations on the things that you do. It is a state of having a wrong judgement or conception in your conduct that allows catastrophic things to happen. In machines, error is a way to measure the difference between the observed value or the computed value of an event against its real value.

It is a deviation from correctness and accuracy. When errors occur, machines crash, computers freeze and softwares stop working. Errors are mostly unintentional events to happen. Most of the time, errors are a result of poor management and preparation.

Having a sign that tells us of issues that we need to solve in life for us to move forward is a great idea. While it does not always work in life, it does in computers. Messages that indicate the issues your computer encounters are called error codes. They appear whenever there is a problem such as incorrect data input or faulty hardware. Computer programmers add predefined error codes and messages in their system codes so whenever there is an issue, it prompts the users. While error codes may be predefined, there are different sets of error codes with different meanings for other kinds of computer programs.

A lot of users experience difficulties in installing Windows software updates. Most of the time, the update error message doesn’t tell you anything helpful to fix the issue. One the most common update error is “Windows could not search for new updates” plus an error code “80240442”. Updates are important as they deliver hotfixes, security patches and other improvements. Therefore, it is vital to install them when they are available.

Microsoft has streamlined the update process in the recent versions of Windows. However, this does not mean that update errors are totally out of the picture especially with issues relating to compatibility.

From the Forums

A user in the forum details it further:

My machine is a 5 year old Acer Aspire M3910 64 bit Intel Core i3 CPU 540 @3.07GHz with 8GB RAM running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. Thank you in advance! I have also run SFC /SCANNOW, but it identified no issues. How do I get over this?

I have been unable to install Windows updates since mid-December, and now have some 11 outstanding. I have downloaded and installed the System Update Readiness Tool from the Microsoft site. Help to resolve this updating error would be very much appreciated.

However the file generated from the CBS file produced by running this tool is some 12 MB in size and falls foul of the 8MB limit imposed by the forum, and I cannot attach it.

What causes Updates Failed to install - Error Code 80071A91

It is important to always run a system diagnostic scan when Windows Updates fail to download or install in order to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. Microsoft provides a troubleshooter for Windows Update related errors that will detect the problem and most likely can automatically fix it. However, there are always these type of errors that are hard to pin down.

Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot the problem and fix it.

  1. Clear up your Temporary Files and Internet Cache and reboot.
  2. Disable your Firewall and Anti-virus software.
  3. Use the Microsoft’s Windows Update Troubleshooter to reset Windows Updates settings to defaults.
  4. Flush the Software Distribution Folder.
  5. Reset the Catroot folder.
  6. Boot in Clean Boot State and run Windows Update again.

windows failed updates with Error Codes 80070643, 80071A91 and 78f

I am having this issue for months now, and i keep getting these errors. Install a few of them at the time and see if you still have issues?

I have searched and tried different methods from other forums but only one worked for me, unfortunately just once ( flushing of the software distribution) but after the next day, when my pc was having its automatic update, it gave me the same errors again, and i could not use the method i used the day before. i have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, SP1, AV- Microsoft Security Essential, CCleaners, and SuperAntiSpyware Free Edition

i always get error codes 80070643, 80071a91 and 78f, and because of these all 23 important updates always failed..

im not a techie person so please help me with light terms if it's ok..

Failed to install 9 updates: Error Code 80070308

Here are some instructions to make life easier

1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy.

The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... Because most of the updates are important; so i'd like them to be installed and they keep on failing every day since then. I just took a look at some other topics in this forum section and it seems I am not the only one having these problems. Is this problem common?

I've tried the hotfix, didn't work out; i've tried multiple CMD commands, didn't work out; i've tried to rename the catroot2 folder, didn't work out either... I've already tried several things i've found on the internet, but nothing really nothing worked out for me. click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

Failed to install updates: Error Code 80070308

Any suggestions? I have spent this afternoon reading the other posts and following the Windows Update Posting Instructions thread so hopefully I've gathered has much info as I can. Attachment 325390

And I received the following error code.

I hope I have not missed anything out. Any help/advice would be appreciated. This resulted in the successful installation of: Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) but the failed installation of the other 9 updates as before.

Good Afternoon,

I am also having problems installing updates with the error code 80070308.

I downloaded and ran the System Update Readiness Tool. But please bear with me if I have. Attachment 325391

I then carried out the sfc/scannow which all came back OK. Kerry

This is becoming a common problem with the latest batch of updates - MS are looking into it (we are led to understand)
I'll add this thread to the action-list for our contact.

Once the installation was complete I tried to reinstall the updates. Attachment 325392

I have saved the logs as a zip file but its too big for me to upload (12.5MB)?

Win 7 updates failed - 80070643 and 80071A91

You should probably also run an SFC to be on the safe side - in an Elevated Command Prompt window, type
and go and have a beer to

I cleaned out .NET framework, and did cleanup
I tried Dockster's fix here
I tried the "Set autoreset true" fix. There are several threads about these errors, and I have read all of them.

and then, after all that, I finally fixed it with...Checkdisk!

(My computer / local disk C: / right-click / properties / tools / check now / "Yes" to scheduled check)

I hope that by putting this all in one place, I can save someone a bit of trouble.

Windows Update fails to install any updates, and shows error codes 80070643 and 80071A91. I tried the Microsoft fixits 50123 and 50709.

Windows Updates Failed BITS failed to start error code 2147024894

Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads. Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.

anybody have any ideas?

Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

have tried sfc /scannow
also the steps in this Windows Update Error 80246008 in Windows 7 - Fix
but to no avail, i still receive the error message

i have also used take ownership on the downloader file in programdata/microsoft/network
and was able to start bits service once i then re enabled windows update. Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save... it hung for awhile so i restarted and got the same error for bits, tried take ownership again, but still get the same error

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data
If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Windows Update giving error code 80071A91

Please help! When I restarted, and reopened WinUp the update was not on the list. Please help me.

Error checked Local Disk C. Tried WinUp, no luck.
2. I turned my computer on, and WinUp said there were 25 updates ready to be installed. I clicked Install Updates and after a few minutes it said some updates weren't installed and gave me error code 80071A91.

Restarted. Ran WinUp, no luck. I'm not entirely sure what to do. I thought I took very good care of my computer.

I've had McAfee Total Protection since day 1 (July 2010)- there has never been a time where I didn't have protection. The updates that haven't installed are in the screen shot I attached- at least I believe it attached

Anyway, I also noticed Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB2879017) was "behaving" funny. Only 8 updates installed (most having to do with .Net stuff) and the other 17 I have had no luck installing. I always update when updates are available.

Did the command prompt sfc /scannow. I have done the following to try and fix:

1. John

Since yesterday around noon, I have not been able to install the rest of the updates that the program said needed to be installed.

Defragmented, then error checked again, and ran WinUp, no luck.
3. I tried installing the rest of the updates, and when they failed and I clicked on View Important Update, "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Ex...

Windows Update Fails with Error Code 80071A91

The first failed update since then was Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3100213) on 11/13/2015 20:25. Reboot does not install the pending updates either. It appears that one of the two drives needs to be replaced. Which is a bit worrisome.

Internet Explorer appears particularly slow and it's not my ISP. Manual installation of the pending updates does not work. System details are as follows:Dell XPS 420 Desktop
Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, SP1
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.4 GHz
8 GB of memory
nVidia GeForce 8800 GT
Generic Sound (on motherboard)
Intel RAID 1 volume with two Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003-9YN162 1 TB SATA Hard Drives
Dell KM632 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
McAfee Internet Security Suite
Internet Explorer 11
Symptoms and troubleshooting to date indicates I have an intermittent hard drive failure.

I've run the System Update Readiness Tool and SFC /SCANNOW. With a RAID 1 mirrored array, Intel Rapid Store Technology with allow me to replace the hard drives one-by-one and rebuild the volume without having to reinstall my software or restore from backup. I only included the log file. I removed and reinstalled the software thinking it might be related and Windows started detecting the Anti-Virus software again but I can no longer access the computers from other computers on my home network.

I also have some ham radio hobby related programs installed that aren't the easiest to reinstall. I'd like to get this software issue...

Windows Update Error 80070643 & 80071A91 on all updates - Win7 64 SP1

SURT has been run. I've run chkdsk & sfc /scannow. All other machines on the domain receive and apply updates successfully. Currently there are 45 updates outstanding.

If I try to apply updates 1 by 1, I get a mixture of the errors already stated depending on the update i'm applying. Anti-Virus is: Sophos Endpoint 10.3

If anyone can help it would be massively appreciated! The update gets to the point in the progress bar where it should be installed but then returns failed with 80070643 & 80071A91 error codes.

CBS log is 185Mb, so even zipped to large to attach, CheckSUR is reporting no errors detected. Updates still coming back with the same error.

MSE updates failed, error code 0xc8000222

so I tried to update the MSE today, but it failed with the description of failure followed:

error code: 0xc8000222
error description: cancel the scan

what's actually wrong with it? Please do the following:
Downloading Farbar Service Scanner

Save to the Desktop. Also, let's see what your system shows with the following short scan... Click the dark-blue button to download.

Close all windows and browsers. zephychan,

Are you having problems with Windows Update also? Make sure the following options are checked:Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender
Press: Scan

FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop. Save to the Desktop.

Right-click and select: Run as Administrator

At the program console, wait for the prescan to finish. (Under Status, it says: Prescan finished.)
press: SCAN

When done, a report opens on the Desktop: RKreport.txt

Please provide the RKreport.txt (Mode: Scan) in your reply.

Please download RogueKiller:

Select the 32-bit version for your system. Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

what should I do to be able to update the MSE?

Updates failed, Error Code:8000FFFF

Not sure what to do, I've tried the following.
1. Next thing I know I get bombarded with 30 or more pop-ups telling me things like; "The cordinal 282 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll" among other similar messages. Most programs wont open anymore, chrome starts up but it wont connect anywhere. Manually uninstall all the updates that I installed today, I managed to delete all except two of them...

EDIT: Added CBS.log!!

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. To make it extra odd; the only reason I can type this message here is because Firefox still works perfect. Tried uninstalling those updates using CMD with wusa command, no success.

Scf /scannow - Found some corrupt DLL files, restarted and problem persists.

2. Several updates failed, I restarted computer as prompted. I should mention that I do not have System Restore or Backup activated... Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report.

The "cordinal 282" message shows up like shown in the attachment but several times with different programs.

So I casually installed some updates with Windows Update. All I get is this error message; "Installer encountered an error: 0x8007371c".

The data is still ...

Error Code: 800736B3 with 7 failed updates

For months now I've had windows tell me that I have some updates to be installed. Every time I try it fails to update giving me the error code: 800736B3. also my cbs.log was too big to fit in that one post so i had to make another one.

Failed updates error code 80070490

Insert the Installation DVD. Reboot the machine > Run the automatic repair.

3. Open up an elevated administrator Command prompt. Run this command:
sfc /scannow
Let us know the results.

The last thing i did was to rename the file for updates. I have been in touch with microsoft and followed all their instructns this is where i am at. As I don't know what instructions you were given by them;

This did not work but has wiped clean all my update history and since then i am not recieving any updates at all, previously i was getting some but not the security updates. Boot the machien into Safemode with Networking, see what the updates says.

Having read another post I am pretty sure I am infected but the post was closed so, I apologize, I don't know how to fix the problem. Multiple .NETFX Updates Failed: Error Code 643

I love my computer, almost to a crazy level, but I'm almost to a point of unplugging it and walking away. I waited a few more days for that one. I didn't then, nor do I now have the time to do that. I'll also start by saying this isn't my first attempt at resolving this.

The final attempt being to uninstall ALL of .NETFX and manually re-install each one individually. The other option I heard was an overlay install. The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply

I thought about upgrading to windows 8 (which I'd rather not do) in hopes it would resolve it, but I'm really not an 8 fan.

So lets recap there. Code:
