What causes Windows instant messenger (MSN messenger live)
Whenever you see windows error on your screen, the easiest and safest way to fix it is to reboot your computer. Just like our bodies needing a shut eye for several minutes, our computers also need to shut down once in awhile. A quick reboot can refresh your programs and gives your computer a clean slate to start a new venture. More often than not, it also eliminates the errors you have encountered after rebooting. It is also ideal to shut down your computer once a week to completely put all unused programs to rest. However, when a reboot does not work anymore, use more advanced Windows solutions to fix your errors.

I go back to the 'Sound' tab and it's back to "Default."
I had the 'instant message' sound shut off on my previous version of Messenger for as long as I can remember.
This sound will simply not turn off. I change the setting from "Default (type)" to "Don't play a sound," and click OK.

Goodbye Windows Messenger, Hello Windows Live Messenger!
Because of the new leaking protection, You cannot login using the new Messenger Protocol 13, so you have to force it to log in using Protocol 12. This works, but Messenger will not show who is online, it will not change your status, and a bunch more things are broken…You can talk though.. Imagine how great it will be when we're going to be able to keep all of your contacts in one place so that when you're using different services you can access this list in the same straightforward way. MP3 Player?
I didn't know why or how or what it all meant, except that I'd have to get new business cards. MSN now means content, like MSN.com and MSNBC. Any other possible new features will be posted later. You can see screenshots of the build by checking out the Forum topic (link below).
Since the internal announcement, I've learned that this name change actually is a lot bigger than a juicy blog post and the canning of a defenseless Lepidoptera (look it up, I did) on Messenger. Buffy focused on the human experience, while Angel catered to the sci-fi-action-loving crowd. Think of MSN like Buffy and Windows Live like the Angel spin-off: same people and same missions, but divided in the interest of better focus. The next one will wear Windows Live.
In some ways this announcement could be misinterpreted as just a Prince-esque or Puff Daddy name change: I mean, look at it from our perspective: one day, halfway through upgrading MS...

Can't install Live Messenger / Can't run any web messenger
I have a little problem. I'm at work, and on this computer I don't have administrator profile so it won't let me install Live Messenger. Any help will be greatly appreciated. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/miranda_portable
The tech guys have also blocked access to all the web messenger services like meebo, ebuddy, etc. Is there a way to get around all this? I remember at college, we used to have a folder with the MSN Messenger stuff in it, so we were able to run it without installing it.
Hide Live Messenger & Live Mail in notifications area in Windows 7.
This will put Live Messenger in the notifications but for live mail you will then need to right click on the notifications icon and select "Hide window when minimized". Note: The Live mail option "Hide window when minimized" only becomes available when running in Compatibility Mode. Then click on the "Compatibility" tab and select the "Run this program in compatibility mode for." box.
I hope this helps some one as I have been trying to tweak this for a while now and I am happy to have found a solution. It's enough ridicolous that MS programs are not fully compatible with new Win7 taskbar features.
Then this is for you... Select "Windows Vista (Service Pack 2)" from the drop down menu and finally select "OK".
If you right click on the programs short cut or executable file then go to "Properties". Make sure the programs are closed before you start. Windows 7 only
Are you are fed up with having Messenger or mail open on your task bar and want to revert back to the good old days of XP and Vista with them nicely hidden in your notifications?

The program doesn't start when Windows starts. I've disabled Windows Live Messenger from starting up, both through Messenger's options and through MSCONFIG.
But when I log on to Windows Live Mail through a web browser, Messenger starts up on it's own. I only use my Live Mail account for junk mail, but need to check it occasionally and would prefer it if Messenger didn't start up on it's own. I cannot figure out a way to disable this.
This is a slightly annoying problem.
I've looked through Live Mail options and can't find anything to denote starting up the program. From this post: http://www.vistax64.com/live-messeng...tml#post964562
